District septentrional de New York, et l’un des cinq boroughs de la municipalité incorporés en 1898, le Bronx s’individualise par sa localisation géographique: le borough le plus septentrional est, en effet, le seul qui soit situé sur le continent. Séparé de Manhattan par le coude de l’East River, il est riverain de l’Hudson dans son secteur occidental et du Long Island Sound dans sa partie orientale.

Le Bronx a connu une expansion démographique spectaculaire au cours du premier demi-siècle, passant de 430 000 à 1 450 000 habitants entre 1910 et 1950. Depuis lors, l’accroissement de sa population est complètement stoppé (phénomène classique de «saturation» d’un district urbain proche du Central Business District): le Bronx n’avait plus qu’une population de 1 203 800 habitants lors du recensement de 1990.

District résidentiel à l’origine, le Bronx compte de nombreux entrepôts et industries. Il offre maintenant le spectacle de la déchéance urbaine (immeubles et magasins abandonnés, criminalité galopante, repaire de revendeurs de drogue). Une importante communauté portoricaine y est installée.
